Locke uses this category to explain how we think about a number of topics relating to number, space, time, pleasure and pain, and cognition. I will argue that discontinuity is not a regrettable side-effect of our ambition to attain goals that are in line with our identity, but that every now and then we give in to the urge to cut ourselves loose from our moorings. This, we suggest, is because its ideas and approach are rather at odds with the dominant trends in the area of postcolonial studies. In doing so, they touch on Reddys concepts of emotive, emotional regime, and emotional navigation, as well as on Rosenweins emotional community and on Stearnss emotionology and offer glimpses of each historians ongoing research. By claiming that ideas are the only things humans have epistemic access to, and by claiming that knowledge relates only to our ideas, Locke seems to rule out the claim that we can ever know about the external world. On the basis of this, we can develop a vocabulary for talking about conceptual changes. Locke also suggests that governments should tolerate the religious beliefs of individual citizens because enforcing religious belief is actually impossible. This form of describing goes beyond the almost positivist attachment to facts that dominates current Holocaust historiography. The mind is then able to examine, compare, and combine these ideas in numerous different ways.
